Periodontal
Periodontal is the prevention and treatment of gum disease. Treatment options may range from simple cleanings to non-surgical therapies that control bacterial growth to surgery, and extensive, involved restoration of supportive tissues.
Periodontal or gum disease is an infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth. In the early stage (gingivitis), gums may swell and bleed easily; in the more advanced stage, teeth can loosen and fall out. It has also been linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and other health problems. Good oral hygiene and regular dental exams are essential in gum disease prevention
As its name suggests, preventive dentistry is intended to prevent dental problems and related health conditions before they start. The health of your mouth is vital to the health of your entire body. Gum disease has been linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, low birth weight and other health problems. Healthy teeth are less likely to need extensive dental procedures. You can keep your teeth and yourself healthy by brushing and flossing every day as well as getting regular dental exams.
Hygiene
It is imperative to maintain your gums and keep teeth healthy. Remember to brush your teeth twice a day. Choose a toothpaste and mouthwash containing fluoride. Floss daily to minimize the build up of plaque on the teeth and gums. For best results, rinse with a fluoride mouthwash before flossing. Flossing will help to work in the fluoride between the teeth. Choose a toothbrush with soft bristles. Replace it regularly every few months so no bacteria can steadily grow in on the bristles, brush your tongue and roof of the mouth to freshen your breath.
Cleanings
You should have your teeth cleaned as often as your hygienist and dentist recommend. At the very minimum we recommend that you have your teeth cleaned at least twice a year. That applies if your gums are healthy and you follow a sound oral hygiene protocol. We suggest a more frequent approach if you have any signs of gum disease, we may suggest seeing you up to four times a year. Remember that regardless of cleanings, we strongly suggest everyone visit their dentist twice a year to be checked out for oral cancer and signs of other diseases whose symptoms first appear in the mouth.
Soft Tissue Management
Is a personalized treatment plan to eliminate infection of the gums and root surfaces. Remember that periodontal disease is an infectious and inflammatory disease that results from bacteria collecting on the tooth surface above and below the gum line, which destroys both gum tissues and bone. This is an effective non-surgical treatment with early periodontal disease.
Advanced Periodontal Disease
Patients with more advanced periodontal disease may require more extensive, or even surgical treatment. At Valley Dental Associates, we are proud to offer our patients the services of a Board Certified Periodontal when these therapies become necessary. Sarah K. Park, D.DS, M. S. is available to our patients on Wednesdays.
